22kt Gold Granulation

Granulation is a technique that gets its name from the process of the joining of small balls or granules to a base of sheet metal, the result of which is a delicate and elegant effect.

"The process is very dramatic, using no solder to join the metal. It is heated with a torch until the surface goes molten while the core metal is still stable. The flow point takes place in less than 4 seconds. A fraction of a second too long will melt everything, and many hours, or even days of work could be lost. The technique of granulation dates back nearly 5000 years. The jewelry making techniques that I use are virtually the same as those used in antiquity."

Ronda uses her inspiration in metals and background in art to design from concept to completion many spectacular works of art. With a sketch of the idea and raw materials, combined with her experience in jewlery art, Ronda begins the process of creating a one of a kind piece of wearable art. As a metalsmith, Ronda Coryell alloys her own gold, draws the wire, and even rolls her own sheet metal. The end result is a unique blend of new and old.
